Recorded as a livestream on Facebook Live on the morning of July 17, 2020, this is the 3rd album of the series I’m calling the Garden Variety Series.
Like GV1 & 2, everything is live and improvised on electric kora and devices. I’ve programmed new effects and textures into my Boss GT-1, distortions, stereo choruses, synth effects and phasers among others.
These new sounds have broadened my pallet and allowed for deeper sonic explorations.
Another feature of GV3 is that a friend and her two children joined me in the garden that day and I brought my acoustic chromatic kora so they can hear me, whereas the electric kora is silent in the open air.
They weren’t the first to have visited me during my live-streams, but the kids added an exciting element to the experience.
“Visitors” and “Garden Monsters” were created in my studio taking my chromatic kora part of the set and chopping it up into pieces in Logic.
The result is some earthy sounds to breakup the ambient textures that dominate the GV series.
